Vern Burke, SwiftWater Edge Tool Works
I spent some time out of the shop today, looking for some nice “barn fresh” tools to restock my inventory. The tool picking gods were good to me today!
First up today was a great Disston D-24 crosscut saw. The D-24 was classified by Disston as a “pruning saw”, however it’s a normal carpenter’s saw tooth profile instead of the Champion tooth pattern usually found on pruning saws. This saw was originally made by Harvey Peace as the Vulcan #15 and sold as a regular hand saw, so I think this will make someone a nice, strong, rough work saw.
Next item to float to the top was a Keystone (by Disston) K-4 “Air Master” 12 tpi panel saw. I believe this saw is WWII vintage (earlier K-4s had a bi-plane in the etch, this one has a B-17 bomber). Absolutely clean and straight blade with a bright and clear etch, a good cleaning and sharpening and this will be a gorgeous saw.
Last but certainly not least was an excellent Plumb Official Boy Scout hatchet, complete with the Boy Scout logo stamp on the head! Unlike most of these in the wild, this one still had its original handle in good condition. Clean, sharpen, and rewedge the loose handle and this will be a darned nice hatchet.
