Questions and Answers: welding a cordwood saw, Disston vs Simonds vs Atkins saws, and more!

SwiftWater Edge Tool Works logoVern Burke, SwiftWater Edge Tool Works

Skowhegan, ME

You’ve got questions, I’ve got answers!

1. (question about welding a broken tooth on a cordwood saw (aka buzz saw) )

Do NOT even contemplate doing this. Even assuming you could do this, make it
structurally sound, and rebalance the saw blade, there’s no chance that the
heat involved in welding wouldn’t warp the saw plate. This means anything from
excessive vibration to failure to cut straight to complete structural failure
of the blade.

2. (question about which is better, Disston, Simonds, or Atkins)

It wasn’t specified but I’m going to assume this question refers to handsaws.
All three were major players in the handsaw market and I don’t think there’s
any way to make a statement that one is better. I will note that there are far
more Disston labeled saws around than Atkins or Simonds labeled ones. The
reason for this is that Atkins put out a much higher percentage of their saws
as OEM saws, marked for their customer (hardware chains, etc) and Simonds only
made handsaws for 25 years. I really havn’t found a whole lot of difference
in them overall.

3. (question about a one man felling saw)

To the best of my knowledge, no saw manufacturer ever made a one man felling saw.
One man saws are always bucking crosscut saws.

Questions and answers from the Saw Shop: crosscut saw safety, cordwood saw mounting, and more!

Vern Burke, SwiftWater Edge Tool Works

Skowhegan, ME

You’ve got the tool questions, I’ve got the answers!

1. (question about the dangers of using a crosscut saw)

The many of the dangers using a 1 man or 2 man timber crosscut saw are the same dangers found using anything from an axe to a chainsaw. These dangers include things like having the tree go over the wrong way when felling it, having the tree you’re felling or the log you’re bucking roll, or a loose limb (a widowmaker) drop out of the tree. The only dangers from the crosscut saw specifically are the possibility of breaking the blade by pushing on it (2 man saws only) or coming in contact with the teeth. Still pretty darned safe when you compare it to chainsaw kickback!

2. (question about which way a cordwood saw blade mounts on the arbor)

The teeth on a cordwood saw (aka buzz saw) should rake or lean in the direction it’s rotating. In short, the cordwood saw blade rotation is always toward the operator and away from the power source (engine or tractor).

3. (question, does rust pitting weaken an axe head)

Excessive rust pitting in the eye area of the head can make the head unsafe to use. Any rust pitting on the sides of the eye more than 5-10% of the steel thickness deep means the head should be junked. Also, any axe heads that show signs of distortion of the eye should be trashed as unsafe, as well as any that distort the eye when pressure is applied by a new handle and wedge.

4. (question about linseed oil on steel)

I wouldn’t advise it. Even boiled linseed oil, when applied to steel, never dries and it will leave a nasty, sticky, mess.

Questions and answers from the Saw Shop: cordwood saw nuts, circular saw cracks, and more!

Vern Burke, SwiftWater Edge Tool Works

Skowhegan, ME

The answer man is in the house!

1. (question about the direction of the arbor nut threads on a cordwood saw)

Cordwood saw (aka buzz saw) arbor nuts are always left hand thread. The nuts rotate clockwise to loosen, opposite the saw blade’s counterclockwise rotation. This means the nut has a tendency to tighten while running, instead of coming loose with drastic consequences.

2. (question about finding cracks in circular saw blades)

The first step to inspecting a circular saw blade for cracks is a thorough cleaning. You can’t see a crack if it’s covered by rust and/or pitch! In my experience, at good visual going over is adequate for detecting cracks in circular saw blades. You could, in theory, magnaflux the saw, but, in my opinion, that’s overkill.

3. (question about which side of the blade to stand on with a 2 man crosscut saw)

This all depends on your dominant hand. I’m left handed, so I pull 1 man and 2 man crosscut saws past the left side of my body. It really comes down to what the most comfortable position is for the sawyer and also whether there are any obstructions that might prevent safely standing on one side or the other.

4. (question about straightening bent scissors)

It’s critical that scissors blades run true for proper cutting action. Blades on less expensive scissors usually cross to some degree to provide the shearing action, blades on expensive scissors generally don’t cross at all. As a rule, if you can see light between the entire length of the blades, you have a problem.

As with other blades, a scissors blade that was soft enough to bend rather than break has about a 50/50 chance of being straightened with a combination of appropriately sized hammer and anvil without breaking.

5. (question about handsaw snaggletooth)

Snaggletooth is a term I use for handsaws that have been severely misfiled. This can include teeth that has been pushed out of shape, raked unevenly, or alternating tall and short teeth. As a rule, fixing a bad case of snaggletooth involves filing the teeth for some preliminary correction and to get enough depth that they don’t disappear when jointed, jointing the teeth to all the same height, and refiling the teeth for final correction and sharp.

YouTube tool videos, the bad, the worse, the silly: cordwood saw, crosscut saw.

Vern Burke, SwiftWater Edge Tool Works

Skowhegan, ME

The bad videos are piling up so it’s time to show you what NOT to do with old tools! Today’s I have a crosscut saw and 2 cordwood saw videos and not a good one in the lot!

First up is this cordwood saw video. For crying out loud, if you value your life, avoid walking around the blade side of a running cordwood saw if possible, especially in a congested area with possible slip and fall hazards from dropping the cut wood on the ground.

Second up is a crosscut saw video. First, forget the competition type crosscut saws for work unless you like working a lot harder than you need to. Sawing your firewood isn’t a race. second, if you’re going to one man saw, use a proper one man crosscut saw. A two man blade that long and that heavy is going to be darned hard for anyone to control.

Last on the “Wall O’ Shame” is another cordwood or buzz saw video. If you like keeping all your parts attached, keep both hands on the same side of the darned saw! Reaching across the running blade is an engraved invitation to a nasty accident.
